It is with deep sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Australian Deer Association Life Member Mike Harrison, who died on Friday evening with his beloved wife, Elaine, by his side.
Mike’s passing marks the loss of one of Australia’s most dedicated and influential voices on sambar deer. His lifelong commitment to understanding and advocating for this iconic species leaves an enduring legacy within the hunting and conservation communities.
In the mid-1980s, Mike and Elaine established the Bunyip Sambar Project on their property boundary, where Mike undertook decades of meticulous observation and research. Through daily fieldwork conducted in near-natural conditions, he generated an unparalleled body of knowledge on sambar deer biology and behaviour. Supported throughout by Elaine’s generosity and hospitality, the project welcomed countless hunters, researchers, and enthusiasts, becoming a hub of learning and shared passion.
Mike’s work culminated in his landmark publication, Sambar: The Magnificent Deer, which distilled more than 24 years of firsthand knowledge into a resource that continues to guide hunters, biologists, and land managers across Australia.
Beyond his research, Mike was a tireless and principled advocate for deer hunters. Across several decades, he played a pivotal role in shaping policy and public understanding in Victoria, contributing to significant reforms that expanded access and opportunities for the hunting community. His thoughtful, measured voice and unwavering commitment earned him both respect and recognition.
A skilled bushman, houndsman, and storyteller, Mike was also known for his sharp intellect and willingness to engage in robust debate, always grounded in conviction and clarity.
Mike Harrison’s legacy endures in the knowledge he shared, the policies he helped shape, and the community he inspired. Our deepest condolences are extended to Elaine, his family, and all who knew and respected him.
Reunited with his boys—home from the hill.
