Police are continuing their investigation following a shooting on Kirkwood Avenue early Saturday morning that left at least nine people injured. As of now, no suspect has been taken into custody, and authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information that may assist in identifying those responsible.
According to official reports, officers responded to calls of shots fired near the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue, just west of Dunn Street, at approximately 12:25 a.m. Officers already stationed in the area monitoring a large crowd reported hearing what they believed to be multiple gunshots, prompting immediate action. The crowd quickly dispersed as law enforcement moved in to secure the scene and assess the situation.
Emergency responders located several individuals with injuries, though it remains unclear how many sustained direct gunshot wounds versus injuries caused by bullet fragments or the ensuing chaos. Of the nine reported victims, six were transported to local hospitals by ambulance, one was taken in a police vehicle, and two others arrived at medical facilities by private transportation.
Authorities emphasized that the incident did not occur on the Indiana University campus itself, though alerts were issued out of caution. Safety notifications advised residents and students to shelter in place, secure their doors, and avoid the area while law enforcement conducted their investigation. A later update reiterated the importance of staying clear of Kirkwood Avenue as officers continued processing the scene.
Multiple agencies assisted in the response, including local police, campus law enforcement, and state authorities. Advanced resources such as aerial drones and a state police helicopter were also deployed to document the scene and support investigative efforts.
Police are asking anyone with information, including video footage, to contact Detective Chris Scott at 812-339-4477 or call emergency services. Officials note that details remain preliminary and may evolve as the investigation continues.
